Time of bouts

Times depend on the rulebook, the round and the category. The tables below restate exactly what each text sets.

§How long is a bout under the WKO 2026 rules?

Men: in rounds 1, 2 and 3, a 2-minute main bout and a 2-minute extension. From round 4 to the final: a 3-minute main bout, a 2-minute extension, a 2-minute second extension, the decision by weight (the lighter competitor wins if the difference reaches 10 kg), then a 2-minute final extension.

Women: in rounds 1, 2 and 3, 2 minutes and a 2-minute extension. From the quarter-finals to the final: 2 minutes, a 2-minute extension, a 2-minute second extension, the decision by weight (8 kg difference), then a 2-minute final extension.

§How many extensions can there be?

Under the WKO 2026 rules: if fewer than three of the five referees support a decision, the bout is a draw and an extension is fought. If two extensions do not decide, the decision is made by weight (a difference of 10 kg or more for men, 8 kg for women, the lighter competitor wins). If weight does not decide either, a final extension is fought, and a decision must be made.

§Does the clock stop during the bout?

Yes, on the main referee's signal: “time” stops the bout time temporarily, “zokko” restarts it. In the event of an accident, the main referee may interrupt the bout.

EKO 2019Time runs from “hajime”; the clock stops only on the referee's command (“jikan”) or when time is up; a red beanbag thrown onto the area signals the end of the bout (art. 7.1 to 7.3).
