Conduct & respect
Dojo etiquette
Etiquette is how one must behave in the dojo.
The rules to follow
- Whenever you enter or leave the dojo, you must always perform your bow — OSU!
- Karate practice requires punctuality. If you are late, take the Seiza position at the back of the class in Mokuso (eyes closed, meditation), perform your bows and wait for the Sensei's signal before joining the class without disturbing others. Eating, drinking, chewing gum, swearing or smoking in the dojo is FORBIDDEN.
- During karate class, always move at a run when the instructor gives orders — DO NOT WALK.
- Your Dogi (uniform) must be clean at ALL TIMES.
- Your nails (hands and feet) must be trimmed and clean. Long hair must be tied back. T-shirts under the Dogi are FORBIDDEN for men. NEVER wash your belt — it symbolically holds all the energy you have put into your training.
- Jewellery may not be worn during training.
- Never remove any part of your Dogi (including the belt) during training. To adjust your Dogi, turn around; to adjust your belt (Obi), place your right knee on the floor, always with your back to the class or your partner.
- Always address the instructor as Sensei or Sempai as appropriate; never call the instructor by their first name in the dojo during class.
- Take your training seriously: never laugh, talk or disturb others; always be ready while awaiting the Sensei's instructions, in Heiko Dachi position.
- Always listen to the Sensei's explanations and instructions, always answering OSU as a sign of understanding and respect.
- The cleanliness of the dojo is your responsibility; please keep it clean at all times.
- Sparring (Kumite) is only allowed with the Sensei's authorization or instruction.
- When the Sensei asks you to sit, do so in Seiza or Henza (cross-legged) position.
- Always be polite, show respect for others and set a good example.
